Abia Governor Alex Otti Pledges to Avoid Godfatherism in Succession Planning

In a move that underscores his commitment to democratic principles, Abia State Governor Alex Otti has publicly stated that he will not participate in the age-old practice of godfatherism, declaring that he will not impose a successor after his second term ends in 2031. Addressing supporters in Umuahia, Otti welcomed former Social Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate Mrs. Ngozi Johnson-Chukwunenye into the Labour Party, reinforcing his vision for a new political culture in the state.

Otti articulated his belief that leadership succession should focus on identifying the most suitable candidates rather than perpetuating a ‘sit-tight’ mentality prevalent in Nigerian politics. “The most important thing you can give a people is good governance,” he stated, emphasizing that once citizens experience effective governance, they will resist any attempts to revert to past failures.

The governor assured his constituents of his commitment to fostering a political environment conducive to the emergence of younger, capable leaders. “By the time I’m done, the person who will succeed me will be better than me,” he proclaimed, highlighting his intention to step back and allow the new leadership to flourish. This approach, he believes, will ultimately lead to improved governance and accountability in the state.

In reiterating his stance on public service, Otti confirmed that he will not seek another elective position after his current term, reinforcing his dedication to the principles of good governance and leadership development. “We will all sit down, look at everybody and say, who is the best person for this job and then all of us will agree and we will campaign for him,” he concluded, outlining a collaborative approach to leadership succession.
