APC Chairman Reveals Over 10 Million Cash Transfer Beneficiaries Lack Access to Phones and Social Media

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has revealed that more than 10 million vulnerable Nigerians who are recipients of the N75,000 conditional cash transfer program do not possess mobile phones or access to social media platforms. This statement was made during a press briefing following a three-day retreat of the APC National Executive Council in Maiduguri, Borno State, where he discussed the implications of such digital exclusion on public discourse.

Yilwatda characterized these beneficiaries as predominantly poor and vulnerable individuals, who, due to their lack of access to modern communication tools, are unable to engage in discussions about government policies that directly affect their lives. He stated, “We have given 75,000 naira to over 10 million Nigerians across the country using the conditional cash transfer under the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction. These people who are poor and vulnerable don’t have telephones to make calls; they are not on social media. They don’t have a television. They cannot come and challenge and discuss as we are doing here, but they are out there.”

The APC chairman's remarks bring to light the significant digital divide that exists in Nigeria, where a substantial segment of the population remains disconnected from the tools that facilitate civic engagement and access to information. As the government continues to implement social support programs, the question arises: how can these initiatives be effectively communicated to those who are most in need yet lack the means to participate in broader societal conversations?

In addition to discussing the cash transfer program, Yilwatda addressed criticisms from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar regarding the government's removal of fuel subsidies. He defended the administration's actions by highlighting the positive outcomes, stating, “After we removed subsidies, all states can pay salaries and pensions, and no state is unable to meet its obligations.” This assertion underscores the ongoing debate surrounding economic policies and their ramifications for the Nigerian populace.
