The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has announced a significant expenditure of over N160 million dedicated to the treatment of snakebite victims among Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from March to September. This initiative reflects the agency's commitment to ensuring that displaced individuals receive necessary healthcare services amidst ongoing humanitarian challenges.
James Iorpuu, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, revealed these figures during a recent briefing, where he also highlighted the agency's multifaceted interventions aimed at supporting IDPs. These initiatives encompass healthcare provisions, food distribution, educational opportunities, and resettlement assistance, despite facing notable funding and logistical challenges.
“We have been spending money on healthcare for our displaced persons. Between March and September, we spent more than N160 million on snakebites alone,”
Iorpuu emphasized the collaborative efforts with humanitarian partners, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), to facilitate the resettlement of IDPs and help them rebuild their livelihoods. The agency has also trained 248 community reporters to monitor conditions in IDP camps and host communities, enhancing the overall response capability.
Additionally, the agency has made arrangements for displaced individuals needing medical attention to receive treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH). Coordinated by medical personnel, including two nurses stationed at the hospital, the process aims to ensure timely assessment and stabilization of patients requiring urgent care.
