Catholic Bishops Launch Nationwide Fasting and Prayer for 2027 Elections
The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has initiated a nationwide prayer and fasting program aimed at fostering free and fair elections in 2027. This initiative, themed 'Let Justice and Peace Flow', is a response to ongoing electoral challenges in the country.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has officially announced a nationwide fasting and prayer initiative to promote integrity in the upcoming 2027 general elections. The program, titled 'Let Justice and Peace Flow,' draws inspiration from the biblical passage Amos 5:24 and is designed to address the pressing issues of electoral violence, rigging, and divisions that have plagued previous elections.
In a statement released yesterday in Abuja, the CBCN emphasized the importance of this spiritual exercise as the nation prepares for the elections amidst a backdrop of growing tensions. The initiative, signed by CBCN President Archbishop Matthew Ndagoso and Secretary Bishop Peter Odetoyinbo, calls on dioceses, parishes, and individual members of the Church to actively engage in the program.
To facilitate this, the bishops have designated October 31 and November 28 as official days of prayer and fasting across all parishes. During these days, activities such as the recitation of the CBCN prayer for the elections, Rosary processions, and Holy Mass will be held to invoke divine guidance for electoral officials and inspire voters to act responsibly. Additionally, December 8 has been marked as a nationwide diocesan day of prayer, coinciding with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
“We urge all Nigerians to participate in these spiritual exercises as a means to seek God’s guidance and to foster a peaceful electoral environment,” the bishops stated in their announcement.
The CBCN's initiative is a crucial step towards encouraging ethical voting practices and reducing electoral malpractice in Nigeria. As the nation gears up for the 2027 elections, the bishops' call for collective prayer and fasting reflects a commitment to restoring faith in the electoral process and ensuring that justice prevails.
