Court Rejects El-Rufai's N120 Million Rights Suit Against Security Agencies

A court has dismissed former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai's N120 million lawsuit against the SSS, EFCC, ICPC, and the AGF, which he claimed violated his rights by seizing his passport. The case stemmed from an incident at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in February, where El-Rufai alleged unlawful attempts to arrest him upon his return to Nigeria.

The Abuja High Court has ruled against Nasir El-Rufai's claim for N120 million in damages, rejecting his assertion that his rights were infringed upon by multiple federal agencies. El-Rufai's lawsuit named the State Security Service (SSS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) as respondents.

In February, upon arriving at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, El-Rufai alleged that his passport was seized and that there were attempts to arrest him, which he claimed constituted a violation of his personal liberties. The court, however, found no merit in his claims, stating that the evidence presented was insufficient to warrant the award of damages he sought.

Legal experts suggest that this ruling reinforces the authority of security agencies in performing their duties, particularly in cases involving high-profile individuals. The decision may also serve as a precedent for similar cases where individuals claim rights violations by security forces in Nigeria.

“The ruling is a significant affirmation of the legal boundaries within which security agencies operate, particularly concerning their mandate to enforce the law,” said a legal analyst. “It underscores the importance of credible evidence in such claims.”

This dismissal comes at a time when issues of personal liberties and the powers of security agencies are increasingly under scrutiny in Nigeria, reflecting the ongoing debate about the balance between national security and individual rights.
