Following a shocking kidnapping incident that unfolded in broad daylight at a popular market in Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo is reaffirming his administration's commitment to combating violent crime. The incident, which saw armed kidnappers ambushing a vehicle, was captured on CCTV and has since gone viral, prompting immediate action from state authorities.
Governor Okpebholo, who took office on November 12, 2024, has made it clear that he will not tolerate thugerry, cultism, and kidnapping in Edo State. In a bid to address these issues effectively, he has proposed amendments to the state’s anti-cultism and anti-kidnapping laws. These amendments include severe penalties such as the demolition of any building linked to such crimes and the implementation of the death penalty for convicted kidnappers.
In a recent statement, Okpebholo emphasized the importance of swift justice, indicating that he has coordinated with the Chief Judge of Edo State to establish a dedicated court for cases related to kidnapping and cultism. This initiative aims to expedite legal proceedings and reduce bureaucratic delays that often hinder justice in such serious matters.
“Our resolve to eradicate these criminal activities is firm. We will ensure that those who perpetrate these heinous acts face the full wrath of the law,” stated Okpebholo.
The recent kidnapping incident, which involved a woman abducted from her vehicle, underscores the urgency of these measures. The police have arrested four suspects, including a female accomplice, as they continue to investigate the case. This incident has sparked discussions across social media and among residents about the pressing need for improved security measures in the state.
