The Federal Government of Nigeria and Enugu State have united in their efforts to tackle food insecurity through a strategic focus on agro-industrialisation and enhanced market access. This collaborative initiative was highlighted during the 48th Regular Meeting of the National Council on Agriculture and Food Security, which took place in Enugu and was attended by key stakeholders from both government tiers.
During the meeting, officials discussed the critical need for policies that would not only boost agricultural productivity but also streamline the supply chain from farms to markets. The emphasis on agro-industrialisation is seen as a crucial step towards transforming Nigeria’s agricultural landscape, enabling farmers to access better resources, technology, and markets for their produce.
“Our goal is to create a robust agricultural sector that can support the nation’s food requirements and stimulate economic growth,” stated a representative from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture. This sentiment was echoed by Enugu State officials, who underscored the importance of collaborative frameworks to ensure that agricultural practices are sustainable and profitable for local farmers.
“By aligning our policies, we are setting a precedent for other states to follow. Food security is not just a local issue; it is a national priority that requires collective action,” an Enugu State official remarked.
The partnership aims to leverage the state’s agricultural potential while addressing the challenges faced by farmers, such as inadequate infrastructure and market access. As Nigeria grapples with food security challenges exacerbated by population growth and climate change, this initiative could serve as a model for other regions seeking to enhance their agricultural capabilities.
