Dr. Musa Babayo, the Chairman of the Board of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), has lauded President Bola Tinubu's proactive approach to tackling structural economic issues that have been sidelined by previous administrations. In a recent statement, Babayo highlighted that the latest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures, which indicate a growth of 4.43% in the second quarter of 2026, serve as a testament to the effectiveness of the government's economic reforms.
Babayo cautioned against a triumphalist attitude, urging that the recent growth should be viewed as a crucial opportunity to consolidate achievements and accelerate ongoing reforms. He articulated that Nigeria is transitioning from a phase characterized by "expensive consumption and fiscal fragility" to one that prioritizes production, investment, and economic opportunity.
He noted, "The productive base is expanding, confidence is gradually returning, and the foundations for a more resilient economy are being laid." Babayo's insights suggest that the current economic performance is more than just a statistic; it reflects significant structural changes that are beginning to take root across the nation.
"The economy is gradually moving from an era of expensive consumption and fiscal fragility towards one of production, investment and opportunity," Babayo remarked, emphasizing the importance of sustaining this momentum.
As Nigeria strives to enhance its economic landscape, Babayo's comments underscore the critical nature of continued reform and investment in infrastructure as the country seeks to foster a more resilient and productive economy in the years to come.
