First Clinical Trial of Ebola Vaccine Launched in Democratic Republic of Congo
The World Health Organization has initiated the first clinical trial of an Ebola vaccine amidst the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has claimed over 4,600 lives. The trial, named 'Tumaini,' aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Ervebo vaccine against the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing its worst-ever outbreak of Ebola, with reported cases exceeding 9,700 and the death toll surpassing 4,600. In a significant response to this public health crisis, the World Health Organization (WHO) has commenced the first clinical trial of an Ebola vaccine, marking a pivotal step in the fight against the virus. The trial began on Friday in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, which is the epicenter of the outbreak.
The vaccine being tested, Ervebo, is currently approved for use against the more prevalent Zaire strain of Ebola. However, the Bundibugyo species, responsible for the current epidemic, lacks any approved vaccines or treatments, posing a unique challenge for health officials. According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the trial will not only assess the safety and efficacy of Ervebo but will also explore potential cross-protection against the Bundibugyo virus.
“Science gives us hope. Today, in Bunia DRC, the first participants were vaccinated in a new Ebola vaccine trial called Tumaini, which means ‘hope’ in Swahili,” said Tedros. “This trial will help us understand whether any of the vaccine candidates designed for Bundibugyo virus work,” he added.
The Tumaini trial represents a collaborative effort led by DRC health authorities, with support from the WHO. It is designed to evaluate two vaccine candidates in a streamlined process that can adapt to emerging data. As health workers and researchers rally to combat this deadly outbreak, the initiation of the Tumaini trial symbolizes a beacon of hope for the affected communities.
