Gombe State Intensifies Efforts to Eradicate Open Defecation

The Gombe State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating open defecation as part of a broader initiative to enhance water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) across the state. The announcement comes as the Gombe State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) ramps up its efforts under the Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) programme, with a focus on community engagement and awareness.

Recently, RUWASSA launched a series of sensitization and mobilization campaigns, starting with a significant rally in Nafada Local Government Area. The event brought together traditional rulers, community leaders, government officials, and other stakeholders to foster community ownership of sanitation initiatives. This collaborative approach is seen as vital for sustaining hygiene practices as the state prepares for an open-defecation-free (ODF) validation exercise.

Leading the RUWASSA delegation was Engr. Mohammed Ahmed Gibrimu, represented by Sector Lead, WASH, Yahaya Umaru. In his address at the Emir of Nafada’s palace, Umaru commended the efforts of HRH Alhaji Muhammadu Dadum Hamza and the local residents in advancing sanitation and hygiene standards. He emphasized the importance of continued collaboration among local government, RUWASSA, and community stakeholders in achieving the state’s WASH goals.

“Our collective efforts are crucial in ensuring that Gombe State achieves its open-defecation-free target,” Umaru stated, highlighting the need for sustained commitment from all parties involved.

As part of its ongoing initiatives, RUWASSA is also focusing on providing technical and institutional support to local governments and communities, reinforcing the importance of hygiene and sanitation in public health. The state government’s dedication to this cause reflects an understanding of the critical role that clean sanitation facilities play in improving the quality of life for all residents.
