INEC Issues Stern Warning Against Abusive Campaign Rhetoric Ahead of 2027 Elections

As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a stark warning regarding the use of abusive language in political campaigns. According to Mr. Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, politicians and political parties that resort to intemperate or inflammatory rhetoric may face severe consequences, including hefty fines up to ₦10 million and potential imprisonment for a period of 12 months under the Electoral Act of 2026.

Oketola highlighted that the line between vigorous political debate and electoral intimidation is crossed when campaign messages devolve into hate speech or threats against voters. He explained that, under Nigerian law, language that incites ethnic, religious, or regional animosity is deemed punishable, stating, "A political campaign or slogan shall not be tainted with abusive language directly or indirectly likely to injure religious, ethnic, tribal or sectional feelings." This legal framework aims to foster a more civil political environment as the nation approaches a critical election period.

The INEC's warning comes amidst growing concerns about the rising tide of threats and intimidation directed at dissenting voters by some political office holders.
