A 50-year-old murder suspect, Bethlehem Nwanlia, reportedly slumped and died on Tuesday during his trial at the Bayelsa State High Court in Yenagoa. The unfortunate incident occurred in Court 11, where Nwanlia was standing trial alongside two other defendants on serious charges, including conspiracy, kidnapping, and multiple murder. Witnesses recounted that shortly after Justice Amadise Michael Ekadi adjourned the case to October 27, 2026, Nwanlia clutched his chest and collapsed in the court’s holding area.
Emergency efforts to revive him involved officers from the Nigerian Correctional Service, police personnel, and lawyers, but they were unsuccessful. Following the incident, medical personnel were summoned to assess his condition, and he was subsequently transported to a local hospital for further examination. The Bayelsa State Judiciary’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Enoch Okunobo, later confirmed the incident, stating that Nwanlia's body had been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) mortuary.
The deceased was facing serious allegations related to the 2022 killings of three individuals in the Kalaba community, located within the Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state. The legal proceedings against Nwanlia and his co-defendants had not yet reached a conclusion, with the court still deliberating on the evidence presented in the case. This incident raises significant concerns regarding the health and welfare of individuals held in custody, particularly those facing serious charges.
“Somebody collapsed and died today. He was a murder suspect, who had been coming to court. His corpse has been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC),” stated Mr. Okunobo.
The sudden death of a defendant in a courtroom setting is alarming and brings to the forefront the necessary discussions surrounding the mental and physical health of suspects, especially those involved in high-stakes legal battles.
