The Nigerian Naira has experienced a notable depreciation, reaching N1,382 per dollar in the parallel market as of yesterday, a slight drop from N1,378 recorded over the weekend. This trend is part of a broader pattern of currency weakening that has raised concerns among economists and investors alike.

In the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), the Naira also saw a decline, trading at N1,331.5 per dollar, compared to N1,330 per dollar just days prior. This indicates a depreciation of N1.5, further compounding the challenges faced by the currency amid fluctuating economic conditions.

Data released by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) reveals that the margin between the parallel and official exchange rates has widened, now at N50.5, up from N48 per dollar last Friday. This growing disparity underscores the increasing pressures on the Naira and reflects the ongoing demand for foreign currency among Nigerians.

“The decline in interbank turnover in the NFEM, which plummeted by 77.7 percent to $24.73 million from $111.06 million, indicates a lack of confidence in the Naira's stability,” said an economic analyst.

As the situation evolves, stakeholders in Nigeria's economy are closely monitoring these developments, with implications for inflation, purchasing power, and overall economic stability. The Central Bank's response to this depreciation may play a crucial role in stabilizing the currency in the coming weeks.
