The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is urging Nigerians to take a proactive step in protecting themselves from counterfeit mobile devices by dialing *315# prior to making any phone purchases. This recommendation was made by Edoyemi Ogoh, the NCC's Director of Technical Standards and Network Integrity, during a recent announcement aimed at enhancing consumer awareness and safeguarding the telecommunications ecosystem.
Ogoh emphasized that the verification process is crucial for consumers, as it not only helps in identifying genuine devices but also plays a significant role in ensuring that substandard handsets do not compromise network service quality for other users. "Buying a fake phone can lead to various issues including poor performance and security vulnerabilities," he noted.
The NCC's initiative is part of broader efforts to combat the proliferation of counterfeit phones in the market, which have become a growing concern in Nigeria's telecommunications sector. With the increasing number of mobile users in the country, it is imperative to maintain high standards for device quality to ensure optimal service delivery.
"Consumers must be vigilant and utilize available resources to ensure they are making informed decisions when purchasing mobile devices," Ogoh added, reinforcing the commission's commitment to consumer protection.
This call to action comes at a time when the NCC is intensifying its efforts to enhance regulatory frameworks that govern the telecommunications industry, aiming to foster a safer and more reliable environment for all users.
