NIMR Responds to ASURI's Claims Amid Tenure Policy Controversy — The Abuja Times Newsroom

The Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) has firmly addressed allegations made by the Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions (ASURI) concerning its recent implementation of the Federal Government's eight-year tenure policy for directors. In a statement released from its Yaba, Lagos headquarters, NIMR categorically denied any claims of victimization against its former research directors, asserting that the policy was not a decision of its management but a directive from the Federal Government.

NIMR's management expressed concern over what it termed a 'needless media controversy' instigated by ASURI's National Secretary, Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku. The Institute accused Ndubuaku of spreading misleading information that unfairly portrayed its leadership. This response comes in light of ongoing public interest and inquiries regarding the tenure policy, prompting NIMR to clarify its position.

In its statement, NIMR emphasized that there is no internal crisis within the organization. It reassured the public that all staff members, including researchers, remain committed to their official duties and that the management, led by Director-General Prof. John Oladapo Obafunwa, is functioning without dispute with employees. The Institute reiterated its commitment to transparency and professionalism in its operations.

“We have refrained from engaging in prolonged media exchanges, but we are compelled to set the records straight,” NIMR stated, emphasizing the need for clarity amidst the controversy.

As the debate surrounding the tenure policy continues, NIMR remains focused on its research objectives, underscoring the importance of adhering to government directives while maintaining a harmonious workplace environment.
