NSCDC Launches Investigation into Deaths of Illegal Miners in Custody

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has announced an investigation into the recent deaths of suspected illegal miners who were detained during enforcement operations in Niger State on September 15 and 16, 2026. This decision comes after the Niger State Command conducted a coordinated operation targeting illegal mining activities in the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto area, a region known for its resource extraction challenges.

In a statement released on Thursday, the NSCDC's National Public Relations Officer, ACC Babawale Afolabi, emphasized the importance of accountability in this matter. The Commandant General, Prof Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has mandated the formation of a high-powered investigative team led by the Deputy Commandant General responsible for Intelligence and Investigation.

The investigative team is tasked with examining various aspects of the incident, including the treatment of the suspects at the time of their arrest, their conditions during detention, and the medical care provided while in custody. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure transparency and uphold the rights of individuals detained under such circumstances.

"The NSCDC is committed to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all operations conducted by its personnel adhere to established protocols and safeguards," stated ACC Afolabi.

Furthermore, the remains of the deceased have been transferred to the General Hospital in Minna for a thorough medical examination, which will help determine the cause of death. The NSCDC is collaborating with relevant health authorities and other security agencies to facilitate this investigation, ensuring that all aspects of the incident are thoroughly scrutinized.
