The Ogun State government has announced a reconstitution of the Awujale Interregnum Council, a decision prompted by the recent withdrawal of several council members amid rising tensions. The newly appointed leadership includes Adesanya as the chairman and Okunowo as the secretary, marking a strategic move to address the internal conflicts that have plagued the council since its establishment in August 2025.
The Awujale Interregnum Council was formed to provide a temporary governance structure following disputes surrounding the leadership of the Awujale of Ijebu. Reports indicate that a faction, referred to as Adele Oba Awujale, emerged, leading to disagreements that ultimately resulted in the exit of some council members. This division has raised concerns about the stability and effectiveness of the council's operations.
In light of these challenges, the Ogun State government emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among council members. The appointment of Adesanya and Okunowo is seen as a pivotal step towards fostering a more cohesive environment that can navigate the complexities of the current leadership crisis. Officials are hopeful that this new leadership will bridge the gap between the factions and restore order within the council.
“It is imperative that we work together to ensure that the Awujale Interregnum Council fulfills its mandate effectively, especially during these challenging times,” a government spokesperson stated.
The ongoing developments within the Awujale Interregnum Council reflect broader issues of governance and community leadership in Ogun State. As the newly formed leadership takes the helm, stakeholders are keenly observing the council's next steps in addressing both internal and external challenges.
