Omokri Clarifies Tinubu's Role in FBI Investigation

In a recent interview on Channels Television’s 'Politics Today', Reno Omokri, the ambassador-designate to Mexico, addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his alleged involvement in an FBI investigation. Omokri firmly stated that while an investigation involving individuals connected to Tinubu did occur, the President was not the subject of the probe. This clarification comes amid growing speculation and misinterpretation regarding the President's connection to funds that have attracted the scrutiny of American authorities.

Omokri elaborated on the context of the investigation, explaining that Tinubu was serving as an accountant at the time in question and was managing funds belonging to clients who were themselves under investigation. He emphasized, “There was an investigation. Bola Ahmed Tinubu was not the subject of that investigation.” According to Omokri, the funds in question were eventually forfeited after being identified as suspicious, marking the actions taken against the accounts rather than any personal indictment against Tinubu.

In his defense of the President, Omokri pointed to a 2003 FBI document that purportedly shows a clean record for Tinubu, with no criminal arrests or outstanding warrants against him. “The President was an accountant, and then the President had client funds. Those persons had been indicted by the FBI, and as a result of that, it said that certain funds… are suspicious funds,” Omokri stated, underlining that the President cooperated with authorities regarding the forfeiture of said funds.

These remarks from Omokri aim to mitigate the implications of the FBI investigation on President Tinubu’s reputation, suggesting that the narrative surrounding his involvement has been distorted.
