The Nigerian Minister of State for Petroleum, Mr. Idris, announced significant progress in the government's compressed natural gas (CNG) initiative, revealing that over 120,000 vehicles have been converted to CNG. This ambitious program is part of President Bola Tinubu's broader strategy to promote cleaner energy alternatives and reduce the country's dependence on petrol.

In line with this initiative, the government has established more than 400 certified conversion centres nationwide, providing the necessary infrastructure to facilitate the transition to CNG. Furthermore, the minister highlighted that more than 90 refuelling stations are currently operational, with plans to develop an additional 180 stations to enhance accessibility and support the growing number of converted vehicles.

Minister Idris emphasized the environmental benefits of this initiative, stating, "Transitioning to CNG not only supports our national energy goals but also significantly reduces carbon emissions, contributing to a cleaner environment for all Nigerians." The initiative aims to address both the energy crisis and the pressing need for sustainable energy solutions in the country.

“The transition to CNG is a step toward achieving our climate goals and ensuring energy security,” Idris added, underscoring the government's commitment to fostering a greener economy.

This initiative is part of a larger effort by the Tinubu administration to modernize Nigeria’s energy sector and address the challenges posed by fuel scarcity and rising costs. As more vehicles are converted, officials are optimistic that the CNG initiative will not only ease transportation costs for citizens but also stimulate growth in the local energy sector.
