Parents Face Significant Fee Hikes as Schools Reopen Across Nigeria

As primary and secondary schools reopen across Nigeria, parents and guardians are grappling with substantial fee hikes, with many private schools increasing their tuition by between 30 and 40 percent. In Lagos State, for instance, even parents with children in public schools are facing a new levy of N20,100, up from N10,100, particularly affecting those without formal employment who cannot provide tax clearance certificates.

Reports from various regions indicate a similar trend, with notable increases in tuition fees at private institutions. For example, a secondary school in the Ipaja area has raised its term fee from N86,000 to N124,000, while another institution in Egbeda saw its fees jump from N250,000 to N320,000. These changes are placing additional financial strain on families already dealing with economic challenges.

The backdrop of rising fuel prices is further complicating the situation, as school owners are now considering scaling back their transportation services. Recent hikes in fuel prices have led some to contemplate issuing new bills to parents to reflect these economic realities. In response, many parents may resort to outsourcing their children's transportation to private transporters and cyclists, raising concerns about the accessibility and safety of school runs.

“We did not expect this sudden increase. It is becoming increasingly difficult to manage our finances with these new fees,” lamented John Aderiye, a concerned parent.

With the new academic year underway, the combination of increased school fees and transportation costs poses a significant challenge for many families across Nigeria, potentially impacting children's access to education and the overall quality of schooling.
