In a bold declaration, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the upcoming 2027 elections, has committed to ensuring that political leaders utilize Nigeria's healthcare services. During the inauguration of the NDC secretariat in Asaba, Delta State, Obi criticized the trend of politicians seeking medical treatment abroad, stating, "We will ensure that those of them who are in power must seek medical care here. Anybody that will go abroad will be for referral."

Obi’s remarks come in the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s extended overseas stay, which has drawn scrutiny and sparked debate about the accessibility and quality of local healthcare. The former Anambra State governor argued that Nigerian leaders must be more attuned to the realities faced by citizens and prioritize domestic solutions. He remarked, “Today, our President is in France. He went for three weeks and he has spent more than three weeks,” highlighting a disconnect he perceives between leaders and the populace.

In addition to advocating for local medical treatment, Obi vowed to spend his holidays within Nigeria, promoting local tourism and facilities. He expressed a strong desire to experience and support the country’s diverse offerings, stating, “As President of Nigeria, all my holidays will be in Nigeria. I will go to Agbor for holiday; I will go to Warri for holidays, not France.” This stance is part of his broader vision to revitalize Nigeria's healthcare system and ensure that it meets the needs of its citizens.
