Police Lockdown King's College Amidst Concession Dispute

Lagos State has witnessed heightened tensions surrounding King's College, Onikan, as police enforced a lockdown in response to escalating protests from parents regarding the concession of the school. This decision came after confrontations between parents, police, and members of the King's College Old Boys Association (KCOBA) earlier in the week, which escalated to a significant altercation at the college gate.

On Tuesday, parents expressed their grievances regarding the proposed concession, leading to a significant police presence that cordoned off roads leading to the institution. By 11 am, police vehicles and officers had effectively blocked access, preventing parents from approaching the college gates. This action prompted a response from the KCOBA, whose members gathered to discuss the future management of the college.

During a press briefing, KCOBA National President Mr. Ibrahim Imam emphasized that the association is committed to ensuring that King's College remains accessible and does not become an elitist institution. “We will run it with unity college principles in mind,” he asserted, reinforcing the association's dedication to the foundational values upon which the college was established.

“We are saying it again that we are not going to turn the college into an elitist one,” said Imam, addressing concerns over the concession.

The Education Minister has also weighed in on the matter, affirming that there is no turning back on the concession agreement, which has generated significant public discourse. As the situation unfolds, the future of King's College hangs in the balance as stakeholders seek a resolution that honors the institution's heritage while addressing the concerns of the community.
