Pope Leo XIV Undergoes Lung Surgery for Cancerous Growth
Pope Leo XIV successfully underwent surgery to remove a cancerous growth from his right lung, with the Vatican reporting no complications. The procedure, involving the removal of the lower lobe of the lung, raises concerns about the pope's upcoming travel plans and future engagements.

In a significant medical development, Pope Leo XIV has had a cancerous growth surgically removed from his right lung during a 90-minute operation at Rome's Gemelli hospital. The Vatican confirmed the surgery was successful, stating that the procedure involved the radical removal of the lung's lower lobe, effectively confirming a diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma that had been suspected from pre-operative tests.
Following the operation, which lasted approximately half of the time he spent in the operating room, the 71-year-old pontiff reportedly woke up normally and even requested dinner, indicating a stable recovery. The Vatican has assured that the pope will remain hospitalized for several days as he recuperates, with all audiences canceled until at least October 20.
This marks the first hospitalization of Pope Leo XIV since his elevation to the papacy on May 8, 2025. His admission to the hospital came as a surprise to many, especially following his cheerful appearance at St. Peter's Square just days prior, where he disclosed to the public that doctors had discovered the growth.
The surgery has led to speculation regarding the pope's upcoming itinerary, particularly a planned visit to Latin America next month. As the Vatican continues to monitor his health, many are left wondering how this unexpected health issue will impact his papal duties and engagements moving forward.
“I will pray a lot,” the pope had said during his announcement, reflecting both his personal faith and the support he seeks from the global Catholic community during this challenging time.
