Sowore and Ekiti Police Clash Over Restaurant Incident
Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, and the Ekiti State Police have provided conflicting narratives regarding a violent incident at a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti. Sowore claims he was attacked, while police describe it merely as an altercation, prompting accusations of evidence suppression against law enforcement.

In a troubling incident that unfolded in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Friday, Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has accused the local police of mischaracterizing a violent encounter he experienced. Sowore asserts that he and his team were violently attacked while at a restaurant, a claim that stands in stark contrast to the police's assertion that the event was merely an altercation involving Sowore and a group of individuals.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, provided a statement indicating that upon receiving reports of the disturbance, police operatives were dispatched to the scene. He confirmed that Sowore had sustained a minor injury during the incident and was subsequently taken to the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti for treatment. However, this description has been vehemently disputed by Sowore, who took to social media to assert, “There was no altercation! We were attacked!”
Sowore's accusations extend beyond the characterization of the event; he has alleged that the Ekiti State Police Command and the Department of State Services (DSS) are actively attempting to suppress evidence related to the attack. In a striking claim, he stated that security operatives had seized CCTV footage from the restaurant, which purportedly captured the identities of the attackers, further fueling suspicions of a cover-up. Sowore criticized the state Commissioner of Police, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, for downplaying the seriousness of the incident.
This clash between Sowore and the police highlights ongoing tensions between political activists and law enforcement in Nigeria, raising questions about the safety of public figures in the political arena. As Sowore continues to advocate for transparency and justice regarding the incident, the diverging accounts from both parties leave many unanswered questions about the true nature of the events that transpired.
