Tragic Diphtheria Incident in Abuja: Barber's Attempted Surgery Claims Child's Life

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has confirmed the death of two individuals from diphtheria in Abuja, highlighting the urgency of addressing the outbreak. Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, the Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environmental Secretariat, revealed during a recent community advocacy event in Karshi that five laboratory-confirmed cases of the disease have been identified, with several others successfully treated.

Diphtheria is a serious bacterial infection that primarily impacts the nose and throat, and can lead to severe complications if not treated promptly. Symptoms can range from mild, such as fever and cough, to severe, including neck swelling and respiratory distress. In a shocking case that underscores the dangers of self-treatment, a young child tragically bled to death after a barber attempted an untrained surgical procedure to remove a throat membrane associated with diphtheria. Dr. Fasawe condemned such actions, urging the community to refrain from any form of self-medication and to report symptoms to health authorities instead.

“We have deployed a multidisciplinary Incident Management Team to Karshi and surrounding areas to track contacts and contain the spread of the disease,” Dr. Fasawe stated, emphasizing the need for community cooperation in managing the outbreak.
