Utomi Criticizes APC Over Luxury SUVs Amidst Soldiers' Low Salaries
Professor Pat Utomi has condemned the All Progressives Congress for gifting luxury SUVs to youth leaders while Nigerian soldiers endure meager salaries. His remarks highlight the stark contrast between government spending and the financial struggles faced by the military.

In a recent critique directed at the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Pat Utomi, a prominent figure in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed deep concern over the party's decision to distribute luxury sport utility vehicles (SUVs) to selected youth leaders. This lavish expenditure stands in stark contrast to the low salaries being paid to Nigerian soldiers, which Utomi described as 'peanuts' in a post shared on social media platform X.
Utomi's comments were sparked by a video posted by the APC National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, showcasing brand-new 2026 Toyota Prado SUVs. Israel stated that the vehicles were presented to youth leaders to assist in their election mobilization efforts ahead of the forthcoming 2027 general elections. However, Utomi questioned the appropriateness of such expenditures, especially at a time when the government has claimed financial constraints.
“Nigerian soldiers are being paid peanuts as salaries, yet an APC youth leader is flaunting SUVs worth billions of naira. This is the same government that told Nigerians there was no longer money in the treasury. At this point, they must think we are fools!” - Pat Utomi
Highlighting the disparity, Utomi pondered the potential impact of reallocating funds used for the SUVs towards essential services, particularly in healthcare. He argued that the millions spent on these luxury vehicles could have instead been invested in acquiring world-class ambulances for the health sector, underscoring the pressing needs of the nation.
As his social media posts gained traction, many Nigerians echoed Utomi's sentiments, calling for accountability and a reevaluation of government spending priorities. The juxtaposition of extravagant gifts to political allies against the backdrop of an underfunded military raises significant questions about resource allocation and the government's commitment to its citizens, particularly those serving in the armed forces.
