WHO Reports Non-Communicable Diseases Account for 74% of Global Deaths in 2023 — The Abuja Times Newsroom

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its latest Global Health Estimates, revealing that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) accounted for a staggering 74% of global deaths in 2023. This figure signifies a crucial shift in the global health landscape, where traditional infectious diseases are increasingly overshadowed by chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

As populations are living longer, the burden of health issues is evolving, with non-communicable diseases becoming a primary concern for healthcare systems worldwide. The WHO's report emphasizes that while advancements in healthcare have contributed to increased life expectancy, they have also led to a rise in health challenges associated with aging, particularly mental health conditions and dementia.

In response to these findings, health experts are calling for urgent reforms in public health policies to prioritize prevention and management strategies for NCDs. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, stated,

“We must shift our focus towards addressing the root causes of non-communicable diseases through lifestyle changes and improved access to healthcare services.”

The report also highlights the disparities in healthcare access, with low- and middle-income countries facing a greater burden of non-communicable diseases due to limited resources and healthcare infrastructure. Strategies aimed at promoting healthy lifestyles and enhancing mental health support are imperative to mitigate this growing crisis and improve overall health outcomes globally.
