In a stern warning, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has indicated that former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, will encounter considerable difficulties in his campaign efforts in Rivers State if he continues to launch verbal attacks on President Bola Tinubu and his supporters. Wike's comments came during a meeting in Abuja with the chairmen of the six area councils of the FCT, where he expressed his disapproval of Amaechi's recent inflammatory statements.
Wike's admonition follows remarks attributed to Amaechi, who allegedly stated that only 'thieves and mad people' would support Tinubu's presidential bid. Wike highlighted that such comments are not only divisive but detrimental to the political discourse as they undermine the integrity of the electoral process. He stated, "If he continues this line, it will be difficult for him to campaign in Rivers. We will not take that."
The minister further criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies for their perceived inaction regarding political figures who engage in personal attacks instead of focusing on substantive issues. Wike emphasized the importance of maintaining a civil political environment, stating, "Agencies like INEC should sanction politicians who engage in personality attacks instead of issue-based campaigns."
Wike's remarks underscore the heightened tensions in Nigerian politics as the country approaches the upcoming elections. With allegations of politically motivated rhetoric and a call for accountability among politicians, Wike's position reflects a broader concern regarding the nature of political campaigns in Nigeria.
