The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a strong warning to Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State, indicating that he will be held accountable for any acts of violence against opposition members. This warning comes in light of ongoing disputes regarding access to campaign venues as political tensions heighten ahead of Atiku Abubakar's planned campaign launch in the state.
In a statement released by the party, ADC representatives expressed their alarm over reported incidents of intimidation and violence that have allegedly been perpetrated against their members by supporters of the ruling party. They emphasized that such actions threaten the democratic process and the principles of fair electoral competition.
“We will not stand idly by while our members are attacked. Governor Aliyu must ensure that all political parties are allowed to campaign freely and without fear of violence,” the ADC's statement read.
The ADC's warning is a poignant reminder of the fragile state of political affairs in Nigeria, particularly as the nation gears up for the forthcoming elections. Political analysts have noted that violence against opposition parties not only undermines the electoral process but also poses significant risks to the stability of the region.
As the campaign season progresses, the ADC has called on security agencies to intervene and safeguard the rights of all political actors in Sokoto. The party insists that a peaceful and fair electoral environment is essential for the credibility of the upcoming elections.
