Aramoko-Ekiti Kingmakers Urge Ooni and Governor to Resolve Alara Stool Crisis
Kingmakers from Aramoko-Ekiti have called on the Ooni of Ife and Governor Biodun Oyebanji to intervene in the stalled selection of a new Alara, which has remained vacant for six months, disrupting cultural practices in the community.

The Alara-in-Council and residents of Aramoko-Ekiti, located in Ekiti State, have made a formal appeal to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, alongside Governor Biodun Oyebanji, seeking their intervention in the protracted selection process for a new traditional ruler. This appeal comes six months after the initial selection process was suspended, leaving the Alara stool vacant and impacting the community’s traditional institutions and cultural activities.
In a statement issued by High Chief Julius Oladiran Adebayo, the Head of Kingmakers, and High Chief Kolade Oyebade, the Secretary, the council expressed concern over the lack of response from the state government despite several appeals. They emphasized the need for the Ooni, recognized as a custodian of Yoruba culture, to advocate for the resumption of the selection process, which has significant implications for the observance of local festivals and rites.
The selection process commenced in April 2026, aligned with the Alara of Aramoko Chieftaincy Declaration and the Ekiti State Chieftaincy Law. Following an Ifa divination conducted by Baba Araba Elebuibon, three princes were shortlisted. However, the voting by the 12 kingmakers resulted in a tie, with each prince receiving six votes. A second round of voting was anticipated to break the deadlock, but this did not take place due to a postponement ordered by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs.
As the community faces an extended period without traditional leadership, the kingmakers have reiterated the urgency of resolving this matter, emphasizing that the delay is detrimental to the social and cultural fabric of Aramoko-Ekiti. They remain hopeful that with the involvement of prominent figures like the Ooni and the governor, a resolution can be achieved, restoring stability and continuity in their revered traditions.
