The Bayelsa State Police Command is stepping up its fight against cultism, with Commissioner of Police Adewale Ajao directing divisional police officers and tactical units to bolster their patrols in areas identified as vulnerable. This initiative comes in light of recent reports indicating a rise in cult-related activities, including initiation ceremonies and recruitment drives.
Commissioner Ajao emphasized the importance of proactive measures, urging officers to quickly act on credible intelligence regarding any planned clashes or gatherings associated with cult groups. This directive aims not only to deter the potential for violence but also to reassure the community of the police's commitment to maintaining law and order.
“We must remain vigilant and responsive to the dynamics of cult activities in our state,” Ajao stated during a briefing. He called upon community members to cooperate with law enforcement by providing information that could help thwart violent incidents, underscoring the vital role of collaboration between the police and the public.
As part of this crackdown, the police are expected to enhance surveillance in hotspots known for cult-related disputes, ensuring that officers are equipped to handle any emerging threats decisively. The Bayelsa State government has also expressed its support for law enforcement efforts aimed at curbing the influence of cult groups, which have long posed a challenge to public safety and community cohesion.
