National Directorate of Employment Launches Ambitious Five-Year Plan to Boost Job Creation — The Abuja Times Newsroom

The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has officially launched a comprehensive five-year strategic plan aimed at enhancing job creation in Nigeria and upgrading its 87 Skills Training Centres. Many of these centres currently require significant renovations and modern equipment to adequately meet contemporary training demands. The NDE’s plan, which spans from 2027 to 2031, seeks to enhance employment services and bolster the labour-market information systems critical for improving job opportunities across the country.

During the unveiling ceremony held in Abuja, NDE Director-General Silas Agara emphasized that the strategy is not just a policy document but a roadmap for addressing the evolving needs of the labour market. He stated that the plan will provide a unified direction for the Directorate’s various departments and state offices, focusing on demand-driven skills development, entrepreneurship, and inclusive employment. “We are reaffirming our institutional purpose and strengthening our commitment to creating employment opportunities,” Agara remarked.

The strategic plan aims to forge stronger partnerships with industries to ensure that vocational training is aligned with current market demands. By enhancing the skills of the workforce, the NDE hopes to facilitate enterprise growth and foster a sustainable labour market. The initiative also seeks to improve the quality and relevance of training provided at the centres, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to meet the challenges of the modern job landscape.

The International Labour Organization has expressed support for these efforts, highlighting the importance of modern employment services and robust labour market data to improve job opportunities. The NDE’s initiative comes at a crucial time when Nigeria is grappling with high unemployment rates, and the need for effective job creation strategies is more pressing than ever.
