The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced a significant initiative in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) aimed at preventing the influx of non-compliant mobile devices into Nigeria. This concerted effort is designed to ensure that all mobile devices entering the country adhere to established regulatory standards, thereby enhancing consumer protection and fostering a competitive business environment.

In a notice issued on October 19, 2026, the NCC reiterated the importance of compliance with the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003 and the Type Approval Regulations of 2024. The Commission has warned that any devices not meeting these stringent requirements may be blocked from accessing local telecommunications networks, a move that underscores its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the communications sector.

The NCC's directive specifically mandates that all mobile device models intended for importation, assembly, distribution, or sale in Nigeria must have obtained the necessary NCC Type Approval. This requirement, as outlined in Section 132 of the Nigerian Communications Act and Regulation 4 of the Type Approval Regulations, is intended to enhance the monitoring of imported devices and ensure compliance with applicable duties.

“All device models intended for importation, assembly and distribution or sale in Nigeria must have obtained the required NCC Type Approval,”

the NCC stated, emphasizing that Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Original Device Manufacturers (ODMs), importers, and other relevant suppliers are required to submit the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) for their devices. This process is crucial not only for regulatory compliance but also for promoting fair competition among businesses in the communications equipment market.
