In a spirited campaign launch in Kaduna on Saturday, President Bola Tinubu kicked off the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign, aiming for re-election in January 2027. He seized the opportunity to launch a direct attack on his political opponents, accusing them of being the architects of the hunger and poverty plaguing the nation. "I hear my opponents talking about hunger and poverty. Who created it? They did. They created the hunger. They created the poverty we are trying to eradicate," he asserted, positioning his administration as a beacon of hope amidst the challenges.
During his address, Tinubu highlighted the accomplishments of his government, emphasizing the regular payment of salaries and the commitment of APC governors to development. He expressed pride in their efforts, stating, "Our governors are working. I am proud of them. They are developing." This statement was aimed at reinforcing the narrative that his administration is actively addressing the issues that Nigerians face, contrasting it sharply with the opposition's claims of failure.
The President's rallying cry for support was clear as he urged attendees to prepare for the upcoming elections, repeatedly asking them to confirm they possessed their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). "Do you have your PVC? Show your hands up," he encouraged, signaling the importance of voter mobilization in achieving electoral success. Tinubu framed his potential second term as a promise of prosperity, continuity, and development for the nation, particularly for the youth. "To you, the children of our country, it is a promise of second-term prosperity. You will not regret going to vote," he vowed.
“This is not a matter of hunger; this is not a matter of anger either. This is about the future of our nation and the direction we choose to take,” Tinubu stated, dismissing opposition criticisms as mere manifestations of their failures.
As the campaign intensifies, the battle lines between the APC and the opposition are becoming increasingly pronounced, with Tinubu's administration seeking to consolidate its support base while challenging the narratives put forth by rival parties. The focus now shifts to whether the APC can effectively translate this rallying momentum into tangible electoral success in the coming months.
